NICHOLA CAMPBELL

Working from my studio near Lewes in East Sussex, I paint with India inks inspired by the natural world around me in Sussex, it's downland, forests and the magnificent coastline, I love the rich, sparkling colours of the ink they are a joy to work with. As well as being highly pigmented, they are also lightfast, permanent and totally waterproof.

Since restarting painting in 2013, my work has evolved and can be divided into collections, the most recent being my series of Framescapes in which the frame is integral part of the artwork as the paint spills onto the frame and sides, making these as much 3-D artworks as they are 2-D paintings. My wood panels are a collection of atmospheric paintings inspired by the beauty of Sussex and my collages are a series of ink and mixed-media artworks inspired by nature's treasures each with a story to tell.

Growing up in Brighton, I studied at Eastbourne College of Art and Brighton Polytechnic (now University) BA Hons Illustration in the late 1980’s. After a long break from an art career, I joined the artist-led cooperative Chalk Gallery in 2016, and in 2019 became its Chairperson. As well as being part of the Chalk community, my work is seen in galleries, shows and exhibitions around Sussex.
